The objectives of the study are to: (1) identify the Malay and English taboo words used in political discourse on Twitter, and (2) analyze the function of using Malay and English in political discourse on X. The descriptive study involved the collection of posts from X using the search words “politics” from 1 June 2022 to 31 August 2022 and with geotagging for “Malaysia”. A total of 126 tweets containing 202 posts with taboo words were identified. The analysis showed that the most common type of taboo words is insult and slur (59), followed by cursing (50) and epithets (49). There were less words on obscenity (14), vulgarity (13), slang (9), and scatology (8). No taboo words related to profanity and blasphemy were found. For the function of taboo words, the main function is discrediting other people or ideas (108). The X user used taboo words for other functions less frequently, namely, catharsis (46), strong interpersonal identification (39), attention-getting (7), and provoking of violent confrontation (2). A bigger range of taboo words in English was found for vulgarity and scatology but more taboo words in Malay were found for insult and slur, curse words, epithets, obscenity, and slang. The findings indicate respect for religious and ethnic sensitivities through the absence of blasphemy and profanities.

2026-05-19T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##https://ejournalunwmataram.org/index.php/trendi/article/view/2914Praxeological Analysis of Grade IX Arabic Language Textbook for Madrasah Tsanawiyah2026-05-20T08:52:31+08:00Abdul Azziz Maulanaabdulazizmaul@upi.eduShofa Musthofa Khalidshofelia@upi.edu
Arabic textbooks play a crucial role in learning; however, improper material presentation and task design can trigger learning obstacles. Given the limited evaluation of textbooks using a praxeological approach, this study aims to analyze the ninth-grade Madrasah Tsanawiyah Arabic textbook published by the Directorate of KSKK of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as to identify the characteristics of Arabic task design from a praxeological perspective. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research design. The data were sourced from the tarkib (grammar) material in Chapter 1, which was analyzed using Yves Chevallard's praxeological framework through four components: task, technique, technology, and theory. The results indicate that the didactic design in this textbook features a structured development of the praxis dimension, but it does not align with the consistency of the logos dimension. Despite systematic instructional progress, the absence of definitive written instructions in the initial phase and the fluctuating presentation of theoretical foundations trigger various learning obstacles, including didactic, epistemological, and ontogenic obstacles. This gap causes students to lean toward mechanical pattern memorization without comprehensive logical understanding. Therefore, a stricter synchronization between task assignments and theoretical explanations is required from the very beginning of the material to ensure students' conceptual maturity in mastering Arabic grammar
2026-05-20T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##https://ejournalunwmataram.org/index.php/trendi/article/view/2926A Deconstruction of the Meaning of Character Values in Chairul Harun’s Novel “Warisan”2026-05-20T08:52:31+08:00Zulfardi D.dosen02790@unpam.ac.idHendry Sugarahendry.sugara@unigal.ac.id
This study examines how character education values are constructed and challenged in Chairul Harun’s novel Warisan. While traditional literary analyses often treat cultural and moral frameworks as fixed guidelines, this research explores how such values are actively contested and renegotiated within the narrative. Using the complete text of Warisan as the primary data source, the analysis follows a hermeneutic-deconstructive four-stage process—identifying explicit moral themes, mapping narrative tensions, deconstructing binary oppositions, and synthesizing cultural negotiations—to examine how this Minangkabau regional novel uniquely portrays inheritance and identity as fluid rather than fixed. The findings reveal two main points: first, culturally respected values are frequently used to justify personal or group interests rather than reflecting genuine communal ethics; second, the narrative emphasizes an ongoing negotiation between individual agency and cultural expectations, with characters ultimately prioritizing moral and spiritual legacies over material wealth. By demonstrating that ethical meaning in literature is dynamic rather than absolute, the study challenges traditional, lesson-based approaches to character education. It recommends that literary instruction should focus on developing students’ critical literacy and ethical independence. Ultimately, this research contributes to Indonesian literary scholarship by providing a clear analytical framework that connects cultural interpretation with critical reading, while offering actionable insights for teaching character education through regional fiction
2026-05-20T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##https://ejournalunwmataram.org/index.php/trendi/article/view/2924Exploring Local Wisdom and Cultural Identity in Students’ Creative Poetry Practices within the Literary Studio Course2026-05-20T08:52:31+08:00Sarleoki Nancy Umkeketonyumkeketonys@gmail.comChrissanty Hiariejumkeketonys@gmail.com
This study aims to explore the representation of local wisdom and cultural identity in undergraduate students’ creative poetry practices within the Sanggar Sastra (Literary Studio) course. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, data were collected through documentation of student-authored poems, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and participatory classroom observations. Data analysis followed an interactive process of reduction, thematic display, and conclusion drawing, with a specific focus on cultural symbols, ecological imagery, and embedded socio-moral values. The findings reveal that local wisdom is robustly articulated through indigenous kinship terminology, nature-based metaphors, and community-oriented ethical injunctions. Students’ cultural identity emerges through deliberate lexical choices, geocultural positioning, and critical negotiations between traditional values and contemporary modernity. The creative process unfolds across four pedagogically scaffolded stages: experiential exploration, aesthetic processing, value reflection, and collaborative revision. Beyond textual production, this practice significantly enhances students’ creative expression, reflective thinking, and cultural awareness. The Sanggar Sastra course thus functions as an integrative pedagogical space that simultaneously develops cognitive, affective, and creative competencies. The study concludes that practice-based literary pedagogy effectively strengthens cultural literacy and reinforces local identity amid globalizing educational landscapes. These findings offer valuable theoretical and practical contributions to culturally responsive language and literature education, providing a replicable framework for integrating indigenous knowledge systems into higher education curricula and fostering ethically grounded, culturally resilient graduates.
The study employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive method. The sample consisted of 16 students from the 2024 Class B cohort, selected through purposive sampling based on academic considerations and relevance to the research objectives. Data collection was conducted using an essay test developed based on six indicators of critical thinking according to Facione, namely interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. The research instrument was validated through expert judgment and analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of mean scores and percentages. The results of the study indicate that students’ critical thinking skills fall into the moderate category with an average score of 64.58. Based on the category distribution, there were 3 students (19%) in the high category, 8 students (50%) in the moderate category, and 5 students (31%) in the very low category. Regarding the indicators, the highest abilities were in inference (79%) and analysis (78%) in the high category, while interpretation (56%) and explanation (56%) were in the low category. The self-regulation indicator received the lowest score of 50% in the very low category. Practically, this study implies the importance of developing reflection-based learning, argumentative discussions, and problem-based learning to enhance students’ metacognitive abilities. Theoretically, this study reinforces Facione’s concept of critical thinking, which posits that critical thinking skills are not only oriented toward analysis and inference but also require the strengthening of self-regulation as the core of the metacognitive process in the development of students’ critical reasoning.

2026-05-20T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##https://ejournalunwmataram.org/index.php/trendi/article/view/2891Representasi Sarkasme dalam Komunikasi Digital: Analisis Pragmatik pada Kolom Komentar TikTok @Chintyamelsan2026-05-20T08:52:31+08:00Ardiyanti Wardanaardiyantiwardana170@gmail.comAndi Saadillahardiyantiwardana170@gmail.comEko Putraardiyantiwardana170@gmail.comLa Aluardiyantiwardana170@gmail.com
This study aims to identify the forms and analyze the functions of sarcasm in the TikTok comment section of the @Chintyamelsan account using a stylistic and pragmatic approach. Theoretically, the analysis draws on Keraf’s stylistics theory, Grice’s conversational implicatures, and Searle’s speech acts. The research findings indicate that sarcasm manifests in the form of insults, mockery, indirect sarcasm, hyperbole, and derogatory comparisons, with a predominance of insults based on physical and social attributes. From a pragmatic perspective, sarcasm operates through violations of the maxims of quality and relevance, thereby generating an implicit meaning of negative evaluation. Furthermore, sarcasm is dominated by expressive speech acts and functions as an indirect directive to convey criticism. These findings indicate that sarcasm in digital communication serves not only as a stylistic device but also as a social strategy to belittle and discredit individuals. The memoir, “Broken Strings: Pieces of Broken Youth,” depicts the psychological struggles of a woman who has endured emotional abuse and relational control. This study aims to analyze the representation of the protagonist’s inner conflict using Karen Horney’s feminist psychoanalytic theory, specifically the concepts of basic anxiety, neurotic needs, and the tension between the real self and the ideal self. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data consisting of text excerpts from the memoir were analyzed through close reading, thematic categorization, and interpretation based on Horney’s theoretical framework. The results indicate that the character’s inner conflict stems from basic anxiety formed within an insecure relationship, subsequently developing through neurotic needs as defense strategies (approaching, rejecting, and withdrawing), and culminating in identity fragmentation manifested as self-rebellion, loss of self-autonomy, and feelings of worthlessness due to the gap between the authentic self and the ideal self created by patriarchal pressure. In the final phase, the character demonstrates a process of self-integration that marks a shift toward awareness and autonomy. This study affirms the relevance of Karen Horney’s theory in understanding women’s experiences in contemporary manipulative relationships and expands its application to autobiographical memoirs by illustrating the character’s psychological dynamics from identity fragmentation toward self-integration.
2026-05-22T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##https://ejournalunwmataram.org/index.php/trendi/article/view/2802Writing About Oneself in a Restrictive Educational Context: Diaries, Emotional Regulation, and Creative Literacy in Islamic Boarding Schools2026-05-30T06:53:08+08:00Laili Amalialailiamalia@unira.ac.idAdi Gunawanlailiamalia@unira.ac.idMuhammad Tauhed Supratmanlailiamalia@unira.ac.idRidwan Lanyalailiamalia@unira.ac.idAbdul Hoffarlailiamalia@unira.ac.id
This study examines diary writing as a private reflective practice among female students in Islamic boarding schools characterized by strong behavioral and communication norms. Previous studies have generally positioned diary writing as either a therapeutic expressive practice or language-learning exercise. Limited attention has been given to how diary writing simultaneously functions as an emotional regulation and reflective literacy practice within highly regulated boarding-school environments. This study aimed to identify patterns of emotional regulation in students’ diary writing and examine how personal diary experiences are transformed into short fictional narratives. Using a case study diary-study design at Bahrul Huda Islamic Boarding School in Pamekasan, Indonesia, 20 female students aged 13–15 years wrote daily diaries over a one-month period. Data were collected through diary documents, perception questionnaires, and short stories developed from selected diary entries. The data were analyzed thematically, descriptively, and through genre-transfer assessment. The findings indicate that diary writing functions as a perceived safe space for emotional expression and reflective self-evaluation. Most participants demonstrated a recurring emotional pattern involving stressful experiences, emotional labelling, cathartic release, reflection, and personal resolution. However, the transfer from reflective diary writing to short-story writing remained limited, as many students produced narrative texts that were weakly connected to their original diary experiences and still dominated by report-like storytelling. This study contributes to understanding how private reflective writing mediates emotional regulation and literacy development within restrictive educational environments and highlights the importance of gradual genre scaffolding in creative writing instruction.

2026-05-30T00:00:00+08:00##submission.copyrightStatement##
