Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of expressive illocutionary acts in the dialogue of the character Ian in the film *Perayaan Mati Rasa* by Umay Shahab. This 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 2 seconds-long film was released in theaters across Indonesia on January 29, 2025, and has been available on Netflix since June 12, 2025. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a pragmatic focus. The research data consists of Ian’s dialogue utterances containing expressive perlocutionary speech acts, collected via the Uninvolved Listening and Note-Taking (ULNT) method a data collection technique involving the observation of language use without the researcher’s direct involvement in the speech event, followed by note-taking to systematically document the data. The collected data were analyzed using the pragmatic matching method with the Determinant Element Sorting (PUP) technique by analyzing the utterances based on the context of the speech situation as well as non-linguistic meaning-determining factors, such as the relationship between the speaker and the addressee and situational conditions. Furthermore, the data were classified based on the theory of expressive speech acts proposed by Searle (1979), which includes forms of expressing gratitude, offering congratulations, apologizing, blaming, praising, expressing condolences, and complaining. The research findings indicate that the dominant expressive perlocutionary speech act used in Ian’s dialogue is the form of complaining. The dominance of the complaining speech act reflects the emotional distress experienced by Ian as the eldest child in a situation of family conflict and bereavement, resulting in utterances that express dissatisfaction, disappointment, and the burden he bears. This finding indicates that expressive illocutionary acts not only function as a means of conveying the character’s emotions but also as a pragmatic strategy to influence the attitude of the addressee in constructing conflict and plot in the film. This study is expected to contribute to the development of pragmatic studies, particularly the analysis of expressive illocutionary acts in film, as well as provide implications for the fields of language and literature education as teaching materials for discourse analysis and the appreciation of audiovisual literary works.
