Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings of both rituals using Roland Barthes’s semiotics, and compare the similarities and differences in cultural values through YouTube using a descriptive-comparative method. This study is driven by how communities historically view culture as a guide for life, especially through rituals. Tedhak Siten is a Javanese ritual performed when a baby reaches approximately seven or eight months of age (245 days) on the calendar, sharing philosophical parallels with Doljanchi, a South Korean ritual marking a child’s first birthday. The findings at the denotative level show that the Tedhak Siten video (Nikita Willy) depicts six stages: stepping on seven colors of jadah, climbing the wulung sugarcane ladder, stomping (ceker-ceker), washing feet, entering the chicken coop, and cutting tumpeng. Meanwhile, the Doljanchi (나도나도dodo) video focuses on thirteen material objects on the dolsang ritual table, such as myeongju-sil, baekseolgi, osaek seongpyeon, susu-pat-tteok, fruit, flowers, minari, obang hanji, five-colored thread, a gavel, a stethoscope, money, and a bow. The research revealed common philosophical meanings in three main aspects: the cultivation of strong resolve (antebing kalbu and obang hanji), self-reliance (ceker-ceker and money), and prediction of the future (chicken coop and doljabi). The difference lies in the symbolic medium: Tedhak Siten emphasizes the stages of the ritual, while Doljanchi conveys its message directly through material symbols placed on the dolsang table
