Affixation and Its Role in Modifying Meaning and Communicating Racial Issues in the Novel To Kill A Mockingbird
Abstract
Language performs an essential issue in shaping meaning and reflecting societal values, particularly in literature. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, both inflectional and derivational affixation serve as powerful linguistic tools to convey deeper meanings and highlight the complex racial dynamics of 1930s America. Inflectional affixes, which modify a word's grammatical function without changing its core meaning, and derivational affixes, which create entirely new words or alter their meanings, both contribute significantly to the novel’s thematic depth (Carstairs-Mccarthy, 2002). The novel’s use of affixation also reflects the transformation of characters, as they struggle to overcome prejudiced perspectives and move toward empathy and understanding. The main person in the novel challenges the "dehumanization" of black individuals, while the other reveals a journey toward "enlightenment" as they learn to reject inherited racial prejudices. Eventually, this paper argues that both inflectional and derivational affixation not only shape the language of the text but also serve as critical lenses through which readers can understand the broader cultural and racial conflicts embedded within the novel (Camp, 2020). This linguistic approach provides a fresh perspective on the novel’s enduring relevance in discussions about race, justice, and human dignity.
